2024 CWG Executive Council Elections

OFFICES UP FOR ELECTION (& Requirements)

There are a total of 17 seats on the Executive Council: 4 officer seats (President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer), and 13 general Executive Council Member seats. All seats are two-year terms.

This year, there are a total of nine Executive Council positions up for election: President, Treasurer, Secretary, and six general Executive Council Member seats. The Secretary and two Executive Council seats will serve one year terms to fill current vacancies. We are also electing five new alternates. We thank last year’s alternates for their willingness to step up.

The President, Secretary, and Treasurer will be elected separately from the EC as a whole. The Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer also serve as members of the Executive Council, in addition to their special roles. Candidates can choose to run for multiple offices, but would only be allowed to serve in one role, should they win both.

Alternates do not formally serve on the Executive Council unless they are asked to fill a vacancy, but they do undergo training and may perform some tasks.

President - 1 seat (2-year term)

  • Role:

    • Convene and preside over EC meetings, facilitating leadership and participation by other EC members

    • Serve as a public face of CWG

    • On the supervisory team for CWG staff with the Vice President

    • Other responsibilities, as designated by the EC

Secretary - 1 seat (1-year term)

  • Role:

    • Maintain records of CWG Executive Council meetings

    • Maintain CWG’s email accounts 

    • Assist with administrative needs of CWG

    • Other responsibilities, as designated by the EC

Treasurer - 1 seat (2-year term)

  • Role:

    • Oversee the general financial management of CWG

    • Other responsibilities, as designated by the EC

Executive Council (EC) Member -  4 seats (2-year terms) 2 seats (1-year terms); if any current EC member currently serving in a seat up for election in 2025 is elected Secretary or VP, their EC seat will be filled for only a 1-year term)

  • Role:

    • Actively participate in biweekly meetings

    • Vote on motions

    • Other responsibilities, as designated by the EC (Also see Requirements for All Seats, below)

  • This election will be filled via ranked-choice voting.

Requirements for All Seats:

At minimum, each EC member (including officers) are asked to:

  • Participate in bimonthly EC Zoom meetings on a regular basis;

  • Commit at least 5 hours (on average) per week to CWG; 

  • Assist with (and eventually take the lead on) organizing, bargaining, and representation work for some CWG units;

  • Administrative tasks as needed.

WHO MAY RUN

With few exceptions, all CWG members in good standing who have signed up to pay dues by the end of the nomination process (4/12/24) are eligible to run.

We are legally prohibited from allowing people convicted of certain types of fraud (primarily around governance of labor organizations) from serving in office, per § 504 of the LMRDA. The federal government has published a helpful fact sheet with information about this requirement (available here).

The Election Committee reserves the right to deny placement on the ballot to candidates who do not comply with reasonable requests for information or compliance with election protocol laid out here.

WHO MAY VOTE

CWG members (Associate Members and Working Members) who have signed up to pay dues by the end of the nomination process (4/12/24) are eligible to vote.

HOW TO NOMINATE YOURSELF OR SOMEONE ELSE 

    • Submit this form by 4/12/24.

    • The Election Committee will reach out to all nominees to confirm their candidacy (and willingness to fulfill responsibilities of a union official), collect bios, and provide more details on the campaigning / election process. 

CAMPAIGNING PROCESS

There will be several opportunities for nominees to campaign, including:

  • A 100-character post that we will circulate on CWG social media 

  • A 500-character bio that we will place on the CWG website and circulate on the CWG Members Slack

  • CWG will send out a total of 3 “digest” emails to all CWG members, that include any campaign materials (platforms, extended bios, etc), of each and any candidate who wishes to be included in the digest (i.e. a total of 3 emails may go out to CWG members with your campaign materials included).

  • At least 2 candidate forums to make presentations and answer questions

  • CWG may facilitate mailings at the request of the candidate, of which the candidate will be wholly financially responsible, to members for whom we have known mailing addresses.
