Gubernatorial Campaign Workers Unionize; First Campaign in Iowa
DES MOINES, IA. — The Campaign Workers Guild on Tuesday announced the ratification of a collective bargaining agreement with Cathy Glasson for Iowa. The contract was ratified by campaign staff for Cathy Glasson, a Democratic candidate for Iowa governor. This agreement also marks the first time a Iowan electoral campaign has been unionized. The Campaign Workers Guild has now ratified contracts with campaigns in ten states.
“We are particularly proud of this unit’s leadership on health care,” said Ihaab Syed, Secretary of the Campaign Workers Guild. “Our members fought for and won health, vision, and dental insurance stipends for their part-time colleagues. That is true solidarity.”
"Our message has always been that we need to make it easier for workers to join in a union or employee association no matter where you work, and today our bold progressive campaign is leading by example,” said Corey Jones, field organizer for Cathy Glasson for Iowa. “We're proud to be the first campaign in Iowa to unionize and we're happy we have a candidate like Cathy Glasson who supported us throughout this entire process. A lot of candidates talk about being pro-union but Cathy didn't just talk, she acted.”
The Campaign Workers Guild is a new independent national union representing non-management workers on electoral and issue-based campaigns.
