Statement - In Response to the Murder of George Floyd

In Response to the Murder of George Floyd

We are furious and deeply saddened by the murder of George Floyd by four Minneapolis police officers. His murder is profoundly tragic, yet not unique; it builds on 400 years of state-sanctioned violence and police brutality against our Black brothers, sisters, and siblings, including the recent murders of both Breonna Taylor and Tony McDade.

The Campaign Workers Guild stands with those protesting this violence. All too often, Black campaign workers are profiled, harassed, and arrested by police while performing one of the core duties of our work: knocking doors. We will proudly fight for any of our union members who are disciplined or retaliated against for taking part in these just protests.

As proud members of the labor movement, it is shameful that some unions have used their platforms to defend murderers and expound rhetoric that perpetuates violence against marginalized communities.

Governor Walz, we demand the swift arrest and conviction of all four police officers responsible for Mr. Floyd’s brutal murder and call for the defunding and demilitarization of police forces in Minnesota and around the country. We demand the transition of public resources to the people to guarantee a living wage, healthcare, and safety at home and in the streets for all.

A more just and equitable world is possible. The Campaign Workers Guild will continue to fight for justice and act in solidarity with our Black brothers, sisters, and siblings until that world is realized.
