Job Description

Campaign Workers Guild (CWG) is a national independent union of campaign and political workers. CWG looks forward to welcoming a dedicated individual who aligns with our mission to improve our members’ work conditions, empower organizers, and promote healthy career longevity. We represent two tiers of dues-paying members: Working and Associate. Working members are covered under a CWG-negotiated CBA.

We are searching for a full-time Organizing Director who believes that campaign workers need unions to fight for fair working conditions, better wages, and respect at work. A strong candidate for this position has a strong understanding of the issues campaign workers face on the job, and has familiarity with unions and the collective bargaining process. This position offers a diverse array of responsibilities in organizing, bargaining, representation, institutional support, and movement building. It offers the potential for professional growth within CWG.

This is a full-time, remote position. The hours are flexible and negotiable but may require evening and weekend work in accordance with the availability of campaign workers and executive council members. We offer a laptop, Healthcare reimbursement stipend of up to $500, and a generous paid time off policy, including 15 paid vacation days per year and unlimited sick leave, and bereavement. It is possible that limited paid travel with per diem may be required. Our target onboarding date is in December 2024 and full time start date of January 2, 2024.

Salary: $72,000

Type: Full Time, Contract to go through December 30th, 2025. With possibility of longer contract when the probation period ends.

  • Probation Period: Six Months

Qualifications

  • Experience with unions and collective bargaining, whether as a member or staff. 

  • Has been a part of or led negotiations for two or more collective bargaining agreements

  • Familiarity with the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and Federal Labor Standards Act (FLSA)

  • Familiarity with political campaigns and organizations 

  • Excellent listening, interpersonal, communication, problem-solving skills, and strong organizing conversation – should be able to quickly and confidently form relationships with workers and potential associate members, including identifying issues and moving them to action

  • Ability to work independently and remotely

  • Excellent time management

  • Ability to plan and coordinate personal work activities, and to keep detailed records and file reports in a timely manner

  • Computer and internet access, as well as experience using G-Suite (Google Apps) and databases

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Training experience, including training staff or leaders in organizing fundamentals and drafting training materials

  • Familiarity with constituent relationship management tools like Action Network

  • Experience handling grievances and formulating grievance arguments based on contract language

  • Experience representing workers in investigations and disciplinary meetings

  • 1+ cycle of electoral organizing

  • Working knowledge of political campaigns (and campaign positions/power structures), state parties, and/or digital firms.

  • Experience filing Unfair Labor Practices (ULPs) and Grievances with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB)

Primary Responsibilities:

Formal governance (Executive Council) management and support (~20%)

  • Report to President and Vice President

  • Work in partnership with the Executive Council, Carry out decisions and direction from the Executive Council

  • Work with EC in identifying, recruiting, and orienting new Board members from CWG membership and ally community

  • Identify or provide trainings to EC members as needed in fundraising, board governance, or any other needed areas

  • Prepare all necessary materials, financial reports for EC meetings, including quarterly organizing reports.

Organizing, bargaining, and representation (~60%)

  • Bargain collective bargaining agreements with employers and CWG members

  • Provide representation to working members including but not limited to investigations, disciplines, and grievances

  • Facilitate CWG annual goal setting process, completion of strategic goals, quarterly goal review, and use of qualitative and quantitative learning metrics

  • In partnership with the CWG training committee, bottomline training resource development 

Movement building and owning our space (~10%)

  • Build coalitions and relationships with strategic movement and labor partners

  • Facilitate member-centered process to determine CWG’s 2025 and 2026 strategic organizing targets

  • Manage relationships with allied and non-allied campaign worker organizing operations

  • Assist EC in exploration of affiliations and partnerships with national Unions

Potential Responsibilities: Supervising Second Staffer (~10%)

  • Develop training plan for new staffer

  • Ensure new staffer is trained on all relevant responsibilities

  • Meet weekly with second staffer to review work plan, workshop issues, etc.

  • Oversee execution of election-year organizing and representation strategy, including preparing onboarding tracking systems and materials, bargaining materials, and work plans for the two staffers. 

  • Support second staffer in creating and distributing materials and trainings for CWG members
